US OUT OF GUANTANAMO NOW!
STATEMENT OF THE COMMUNIST LEAGUE AND YOUNG SOCIALISTS (CANADA)
Joe Young and Pierre-Luc Filion
This International Seminar for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases is an important occasion to express solidarity with the Cuban people and Cuba’s socialist revolution. We welcome the opportunity to participate.
The Communist League and Young Socialists in Canada joins with all those who call for the immediate return to Cuba of Guantanamo. The illegal occupation of Guantanamo by the United States for over a century is an outrageous violation of Cuban sovereignty. The prison there stands as an indictment of brutal capitalist “justice”. There can be no relations, based on respect for the sovereignty of Cuba, unless the US government gets out of Guantanamo now.
While the Canadian government has never cut ties with Cuba and trades with Cuba, the aim of Canada’s rulers is the overthrow of the Cuban revolution. They have never forgiven Cuba’s workers and farmers for the expropriation of their holdings in mining, banking and other sectors. During Cuba’s internationalist aid to Angola against the invasion by the South African apartheid regime, the Canadian government cut aid to Cuba for 16 years until 1994 in retaliation.
The ruling rich of Canada fear the example Cuba’s working people and their communist leadership have given taking power out of the hands of the capitalist property owners and working to build a socialist society. They fear the example of working people transforming themselves as they fight together to build socialism based on human needs and not profit.
In today’s world wracked by the economic crisis of the capitalist system and growing wars and threats of war, more and more workers in Canada are receptive to the road that Cuba is following as a solution to what they face. A growing layer of workers are permanently unemployed undermining their confidence and self-respect. More people are dying from drug over doses. Using the pretext of terrorist threats workers democratic rights are under attack by Ottawa.
From bakery workers in Vancouver and Laval, Quebec to zinc refinery workers near Montreal, there is resistance to the employers’ offensive. As we go door to door discussing with workers in their neighborhoods we find responsiveness to building a party of workers and farmers to take power from the hands of the capitalist class as Cuba’s working people did in 1959.
It is among these workers and others like them that we seek to broaden the opposition in Canada to the US government’s illegal occupation of Guantanamo. US out of Guantanamo now! End the US economic war against Cuba! End the subversive programs now!
